Melody Of My Mother (English translation of Niguna Shel Imi)
(Unreleased song, Esther Ofarim only recorded it for Kol Israel radio in 1961)
(lyrics: Oded Avissar, music and arrangement: Moshe Wilensky)
(
Hebrew original)
(
German translation)

The story is ancient,
and weary of all the ages.
She was a song, with sky-blue eyes,
and her hair was a sea, waves of gold.

And every day I picked for her
the dream-flowers from my heart,
but she scattered them all to the wind,
and my star fell and went out.

Then only one remained,
who came alone
to ask and inquire how I was.
And silently, secretly,
he offered me as a gift
the bundle of flowers from my childhood.

It was the melody that since then
has been my mother’s only song.

The story is ancient,
and weary of all the ages.
For the stars of the heavens winked at me,
longing for a dream of gold.

So I went wandering, gathering
distant stars across the world.
But a silver thread appeared in my hair,
and my pouch emptied of all the stars.

Then only one remained,
who came alone
to ask and inquire how I was.
And silently, secretly,
he offered me as a gift
the bundle of stars from my childhood.

It was the melody that since then
has been my mother’s only song.
